An announcement turned budget commitment
The visa exemption was announced at the African Water Forum held in N'Djamena in July 2026. It was then confirmed in the presidential letter on preparing the 2027 budget. Border reform thus becomes an explicit part of the country's economic strategy.
Who stands to benefit?
The first beneficiaries should be those involved in regional trade. Traders, transporters and investors from neighbouring countries will be able to travel more easily, without prior formalities or visa fees.
The hotel and restaurant sector in N'Djamena can also hope for more visitors for conferences, trade fairs and business missions. Airlines serving Chad could see demand grow on African routes.
Conditions for success
Removing visas is not enough to attract visitors. Regular and affordable flights, quality hotel capacity, working digital payment services and efficient reception at the borders will also be needed.
Security remains an important issue. Border services will have to balance openness and vigilance, notably through modern registration systems at entry points.
A signal for African integration
Chad thus joins the African countries that have chosen to open their borders widely to travellers from the continent, in the spirit of the African Continental Free Trade Area. For Chadian businesses, it is an opportunity to position themselves as partners and suppliers in regional trade.
